Informazioni storia

Wall panel in opus sectile, i.e. composed of inlays of coloured marble and mother-of-pearl, depicting a scene from the processus consularis. In the image the consul parades in procession on a chariot drawn by horses and flanked by four charioteers on horseback dressed in the colors of the four factions of the circus for which they competed.
It comes from the Basilica of Junius Bassus, which later became the church of St. Andrew Catabarbara and was destroyed during the construction of the Pontifical Seminary of Oriental Studies, in Via Napoleon III. The panel was owned by the Del Drago family, then Massimo, and finally passed to the Museo Nazionale Romano.
