Informazioni storia

The colossal statue represents the goddess Aphrodite and is a copy of the so-called Aphrodite of Arles, made by Praxiteles around 360 BC. The goddess is dressed only in himation (cloak), which is wrapped around the left arm, leaving the torso uncovered. The right arm is bent and raised, perhaps in the gesture of styling her hair. One of the best known copies of the statuary type is in Paris, in the Louvre. The statue was found together with other works, all of very high sculptural quality. It was discovered in 1921 during the construction of a building in Via Ruggero Bonghi.
