Informazioni storia

The baker Eurisaces and his wife Atistia are the two people depicted in this large relief from the tomb next to the Porta Maggiore. The couple, standing, are looking at each other and their faces have the realistic, if somewhat harsh, features of portraiture from the Republican era. The way they are dressed and the woman's hairstyle faithfully documents the fashion of the mid-first century BC. The head of Atistia, stolen in 1934, has been replaced with a plaster cast made on the basis of photographs taken before the theft.
