Informazioni storia

The statue, freely inspired by Praxitelian models from the 4th century BC, represents the naked young Dionysus and is dated to the 2nd century AD. It was part of a group that included a procession of which almost nothing remains, as well as the decoration of the trunk on which the figure rests. Fragments at the base of the sculpture and on the trunk that serves as a prop indicate that animal figures (a panther) and vine shoots were included in the composition.
Discovered in the vicinity of the so-called temple of Minerva Medica (1879), it was reused as building material for filling in some walls.
