This fresco comes from the tomb of the Fabii, discovered in 1875 near Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. Little remains of the sepulcher decoration, but this fresco, although fragmentary, is a document of exceptional importance as an example of triumphal painting. The subjects represented are armed men and fights at least in part referable to the Samnite Wars in which a member of the family that owns the tomb took part. The Q. Fabius and M. Fannius, shown next to the two characters, are connected to the same family.
